Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles were the founders of Heaven's Gate, a new religious movement that focusses on extraterrestials, UFOs, and spiritual realm called "The Evolutionary Level Above Human" (also known as the Next Level and the Kingdom of Heaven). The two met at a psychiatric hospital Applewhite was staying at and Nettles was working at. Nettles was invested in theology and urged Applewhite that he was destined for a greater spiritual purpose. They studied certain concepts from the New Testament, like asceticism, and combined it with Applewhite's readings of science fiction into a basic doctrine which claimed that they were the two witnesses from the Book of Revelations. They came to believe that they would be killed and reborn then be sent away on a spaceship, and this understanding would serve to be the basis of the belief system for Heaven's Gate. The two would then start recruiting followers into their movement. They adopted various monikers and aliases, like Bo & Peep and Ti & Do, and went to cities ranging from Oregon to San Diego, usually targetting those who were not satisfied with current religions and beliefs and desired some spiritual truth.
